On December 14, 2021, the USB-IF Association finally officially opened the 240W EPR Type-C data cable and charger standard, where EPR stands for "Extended Power Range".

Under the new standard, the maximum voltage of the charger is greatly increased from 20V to 48V, and the maximum current is 5A, so the maximum power reaches 240W. The extreme working voltage may be as high as 50.9V, so the built-in VBUS capacitor of the data line is required to have a withstand voltage higher than 50.9V, which is different from the previous 100W standard. At the same time, the original 20V/5A 100W USB Type-C data cable will stop being certified after December 22, 2021.

In order to comply with the new standard, the certified 240W (EPR) USB Type-C data cable will have a special logo for identification, including the word "Certified USB Type-C 240W Cable" on the product description, as shown in Figure 1, in which the color The black one is used for packaging and tagging labels, and the black one is used for printing on the outer film of the male head of the data cable, which is easy for consumers to identify.

At present, most smartphones or tablet computers generally only need 15W ~ 25W of power, and most notebook computers only need about 65W. In theory, the USB-C Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 fast charging standard can handle up to 100W of power, which is enough. However, with more high-performance laptops, such as the MacBook Pro with M1 Pro / Max processors, and some gaming laptops with independent graphics cards, 140W or even 300W of power will be required, so the market is not interested in higher-power USB Type-C charging products and cables will be in great demand.
